Mother's Help
The role of the mother’s help is a combination of childcare and assistance around the house.
Qualifications. A mother’s help may or may not have previous experience in child care.
Duties. A mother’s help is expected to do most of the things a nanny would do with children but under the supervision of – usually – the mother. The degree of supervision depends on the task being undertaken and the supervisor’s assessment of the ability of the mother’s help to cope on their own. Household tasks might include cooking, cleaning, laundry or shopping. Please click Contracts for more information on this.
Conditions. Generally, a mother’s help will expect to work a five-day week from Monday to Friday, and live-ins will also baby-sit up to twice a week on weekdays.
A live-in mother’s help will expect their privacy to be respected when not on duty. It is a matter for negotiation between employer and the mother’s help as to whether they participate in family life (eg: joining in meals) when not on duty.
